What is EMDR therapy?
EMDR stands for Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing. It is a therapy approach that helps the brain process distressing memories, negative beliefs, and overwhelming experiences so they feel less intense and disruptive over time.
Is EMDR only for trauma?
EMDR is well known for trauma treatment, but it may also be used for anxiety, negative beliefs, self-esteem concerns, grief, stressful experiences, and emotionally overwhelming memories.
Is EMDR safe for children and teens?
EMDR can be adapted for children and teens when clinically appropriate. With younger clients, EMDR may include developmentally appropriate language, creative activities, play-based interventions, and caregiver involvement when needed.
Do I have to talk about every detail of what happened?
Not always. EMDR does not require the same level of detailed verbal sharing as some traditional talk therapy approaches. Your therapist will discuss what is clinically appropriate and help you move at a pace that feels safe and manageable.
